Establishment of a hydrogen economy from renewable energy in the Berlin/Brandenburg region

75MW electrolysis plant for the production of >30 tons of hydrogen per day has been planned. The electricity required for the electrolysis will be generated from renewable energy. The hydrogen will be processed using carbon capture and usage (CCU) at the on-site industrial park to produce raw materials for refineries and the chemical industry. Transportation will be via climate-neutral rail.

Further connected projects

  • Creation of a pay per use hydrogen infrastructure for delivery services from logistics centers in Berlin’s environs into the capital. Retrofitting of vehicles, which do not complywith the Euro standard anymore, with hydrogen propulsion, i.e. the provision of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (trucks, transporters) in order to meet the EU’s REDII emission directives for vehicle fleets and expected Diesel bans,
  • Providing relief to Berlin’s public transport system via hydrogen propelled boats on navigable waterways (for example in Spandau),
  • Additionaly development of the infrastructure and operation of hydrogen fuel cell applications for public transport (busses and trains (diesel routes, freight)),
  • Manufacture of synthetic climate neutral kerosene for the BER airport or feedstock chemicals by means of carbon capture,
  • Hydrogen infeed into the gas network for the reduction of CO2 figures for Berlin’s largest emission sector: heat generation,
  • Heating of the capital’s public buildings by means of hydrogen and FCmCHP (Fuel Cell micro Cogeneration Heat and Power) technology,
  • Build-up and operation of reference hydrogen power plants for the balancing of fluctuations in electricity production from renewable energy,
  • Build-up of the capital’s hydrogen production/infrastructure for waste incineration facilities and wastewater treatment plants.
